Final Fall

FINAL FALL

Final Fall is a site specific response to the imminent HS2 (High Speed train) redevelopment of Euston Station.  The parish of St Pancras is very affected:  St James's Gardens, which used to be a cemetery (west of Euston Station) is a rare and beautiful green space.  It will be cleared first to create a construction site, and around thirty 100 ft London Plane trees, some of which were planted around 200 years ago, will be cut down.

The London Plane tree is an infertile hybrid and none has so far died of old age or sickness; only a few have blown down.  So it can only be killed by the act of man or God.

In Final fall, 17 paper memorials individually made from the (probable) final leaf fall of each of the oldest of these trees are set on a monumental ciment fondu altar.
