A 5 metre raft made with recycled materials
Sketch for 5 metre raft; the steering oar; water supplies in fishing net from Hastings Fishermen's Union; Ship's biscuits
More information: The Raft design was submitted in response to a call from curator Edwina fitzPatrick for a Raft Collective to be formed to produce an ocean going raft for the Exhibition "Larsen's Lost Water" to open November 12th 2015 in Wimbledon Space: - Curator Edwina fitzPatrick.
The steering oar: the 4m oar was carried 4 kilometres from river to house and a further 4 kilometres from house to gallery. It the course of its journey through the crowded streets it became a displaced object; a metaphor for negotiation.
The raft is also displaced, run aground in the interior gallery space, the sail devoid of wind. Its scale is magnified by the objects around it. It doesn't explain itself.
The raft carries essential survival materials: ship's biscuits and of course fresh water.
Everyone asks, "will you take it to the water?"
